Study to be...

I can hear my dad right now. He would come into a noise filled room with the 3 of us kids hollering about one thing or another, and very quietly he would say...

"Study to be quiet."

And then he gently closed the door, and went back to his office.

I don't think I ever paid much attention to actually studying to be quiet. We probably muffled our giggles since we were the culprits, and lowered the whole tone of the noise for at least a little while, but study to be quiet?? No, I did not.

study... contemplate, consider, deliberate, examine.

He was trying to get us to think about the word and what it means... study on it, improve in this area, practice it...

be quieter!

I think dad thought that if we at least paused and gave it an honest look, maybe we would all shush! Being quiet takes an effort, a study, a choice.

I sure get it now!

There are days when I realize that so many things I didn't think about back then, I LIVE by now!

Is that wisdom, or simply old age?

Or maybe it's the wisdom that COMES with old age.

('Old age' being a relative term, not necessarily applying to me!... :)

..."In quietness and confidence shall be your strength, and ye would not"...

Even if it takes years, you learn wisdom from your dad. And then you pass it along to us. Thank you!

Love,
Debbie

I'm still "study-ing"!

I'm working towards my Phd in "studying to be quiet". About the time I graduate from one level of understanding, I come across an altogether new one aspect. After I'm through with my tantrum (I still have far too many of them), I begin the studying process again in earnest.

What I know about being old, is that I value quietness like never before.

I love your Dad's wisdom. You are an apple that doesn't fall far from that tree! :)

when my dad came home from 18 hours
at the hospital, we were all in bed. do
men work those long hours these days?

i love your dad's admonition. it seems
to have taken root.

Your dad sounds like he was a very wise man.

I can't tell you how many times I have described the turmoil in my life by saying, "I just can't seem to find quiet." Yes, I do think it's something we must seek. And embracing silence and solitude is worth the search. We need it to recharge and restore our weary spirits. I believe Jesus set a good example for us!

GOD BLESS!

(Totally it's wisdom - NOT old age...)

The blessed gift of quietness! How I miss it when I don't cultivate it. You're right - a habit. For me, it's also a must. Without intentional times of quietness, I would go crazy. I'm so glad to know (finally at 46) the value of this gift.

Praying God gives you many quiet moments of reflection and pause this Easter week.
