This is probably not blog worthy, but here it is anyway...
Do you ever hear those commercials advertising mattresses? The ones that tell you to try it for 2 weeks and if you don't like it, you can return it!
Gives me the creeps. How on earth do you buy a new mattress without wondering WHO has tried this for 2 weeks already by the time it is delivered to me??
Not only that, but what about those labels? On pillows and mattresses. It says it is 'against the law to remove the tags.' What?? Is someone going to arrest me if I cut off that long white tag? (For the record, I ALWAYS cut it off, so if you never hear from me again, you'll know they read this blog and came after me!)
One more thing... I keep hearing these commercials about different medicines. First they tell you how your life is going to be different, picturing someone happily walking along the beach or on a mountain, hair blowing in the wind, quickly followed by 'in case of... could cause serious life threatening or even fatal problems.' When you hear what the warnings are, why in the world would you want to try the medicine?? Sounds like the cure is far worse than the problem.
I warned you... not blog worthy, but still... does it ever make you wonder about all the hype sent our way?
Mattress, pillows and medicine aside...
"In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe." (Ps.4:8)
Actually, very blog worthy because it makes you think and draws out a response.
I had never thought about the mattress thing, and I'll add my EWWWW now that you've pointed it out.
As for the warnings, that is one of the reasons that I have opted out of a specific medicine for fibro. Good grief, the side effect list is a mile long. No thanks.
Perhaps it time to turn off the T.V.
The comics are about the only thing
you can trust coming from the world.
Loved the "blog". Thanks
This is great...and I totally agree. I even planned out a blog one day about cutting off the tags on pillows. I totally agree on the medicine, but like most medical things if we knew the other side we wouldn't do or use most medicines.
Never really thought about the mattresses or pillows, does make you wonder now that you brought it up. As far as the medicines advertised...by the time they go through the list of side effects I can't figure out why anyone would want to take any of them
I have to add my two cents on the medicine side effects. What has happened in our culture is that people are sue happy. The attorneys get involved and everyone gets scared of a lawsuit. So now even if only 1 in a million had a specific side effect, they have to tell you. There's power in suggestion. You end up looking for these side effects if you're taking the medication. Typically, there's maybe one or two common side effects that might happen with a particular medication. The rest is very uncommon. I believe you need to find a doctor that you trust. He or she will weigh the benefits versus risk in prescribing a medicine. But that's just me ...
However, it goes back to taking charge of our own health. Healthy lifestyle habits can often avoid expensive medicine and need for healthcare. I know that's a broad statement and some things can't be avoided but many can.
I guess this was a worthwhile post Sonja. And I wouldn't buy one of those mattresses either.
haha so true every single one of the things you wonder about. Every time I take off a tag, I wonder if there will be a knock at the door. Listening to those commercials for "cures???" Make me wonder too. Really, may cause blindness and death? Really who would take that?
That they advertise it just gives me the shivers.
I haven't heart the mattress commercial. Well it is nice to know that you think the same thing.
You made me laugh this morning.
My niece actually has an entire comedy routine about medication commercials. It is so funny that I laugh until I cry. Exactly! They should not bother to advertise.
Yes. Truly scary. All of it. :) I enjoyed this post. Hopped over for a visit from Maryann's place (I see was here today and left a comment already). Blessings to you! Camille
I didn't really think about the mattress thing. Yuck. I was always disturbed by those commercials that told you how many extra pounds (of sweat and skin cells) your mattress accumulated in 8 years. I may never sleep again...
Yes, I cut off those labels. So, arrest me.
And yes, those *disclaimers* that they rattle off sofastyoucanhardlyunderstandthem...they scare me to death (sometimes literally???) The ones that make me laugh are the ones for social anxiety - the side effects are things like nausea, gas, diarrhea, etc. I don't know about you, but that just might put a dent in my dating.
Blog worthy indeed!!
Hi, I think you and I think along the same tracks when it comes to the commercials. I always shake my head when the drugs/medicines talk about the side effects that are as bad as the condition.
I think it was a fine post!
ha! i was right!! i just knew this would be
i cut off the tags in defiance! and it is very
creepy to think someone may have slept on
my brand new mattress.
i'm going to the floor.
every thing you write about is well worth reading and reflecting over.
I'm glad Norway is more old fashioned than America concerning lawsuits, and therefor we are allowed to cut off any label we want to.
I once read about an American lady winning a lawsuit because there were no waring on the cup about the coffee was hot.
Mattresses and bed clothes are things I dare not think about when we are sleeping in hotels. Honestly, have you ever considered how many...e.t.c.
I always read the warnings of my medication bottles. My old mother over and over had side effects of the medication she was given. Especially medication to "calm her down",to make her less frightened and let her sleep at night. Horrible, just horrible. She also got rashes from some quite ordinary painkillers. Gunnar made photos of the rashes to bring with us next time she was hospitalized. I suppose that would not happen in a country where lawyers are a so vital part of the system. There will always be pros and cons everywhere.
BLOG WORTHY IT IS my dear, when you write it in such an informative and comic way! Comic in the sense that the reader enjoys the irony because we too have noticed these ridiculous things, but when someone dares to write it, we applaud and chuckle, "YES! I KNOW!" I want to stay away from having to take medications for as long as my health will stand it. And those tags....I always wondered WHY it's against the law!
Thank you dearest Sonja for skipping by my blog ! Good to see you and yes, this France party we had was such an uplifting link party. Acknowledging one another is a gift to give each other.
Have a blessed day! Anita
Well I can see I agree with everyone else. This was a GOOD post and I have wondered and even laughed about all of this myself. Those medicine commercials are enough to keep you from ever even wanting to try one of them. And as for the mattresses, while I haven't really given that much thought in the past, I certainly will now, haha. And I can add a big, fat eeewww to everyone else's haha! Enjoy your day!
What's more, if you sleep in THAT bed, and take THAT medicine, & use THAT haircare/skincare product, & eat according to THAT diet plan you can be reasonably certain to return (ala Dorothy to Oz) to the beauty & vigor of your 25th year.
I'm a wee bit inclined to talk to the T.V. sometimes (problematic, I know), and to these I say: "Read my lips: "Bunk".
VERY blog-worthy. How do I know? No bunk!
Oh, I WONDER all right! :)
Well my friend, you certainly gave me some humor this morning. I am right with you on each one of these subjects, and my husband would gladly vouch for it. I feel a bit of rebellion when I cut off the white tags, and so I too my disappear:) As for the medicine side effects...that totally does me in when they list them all. This is a good post and you did hit the nail on the head when sharing it. I am still smiling at it's content.
