Dad preached, we went along for the ride...#7...

One of my favorite memories as we traveled around the USA during the summer months, and dad preached in lots of churches...

(a side note here... even though I look back on those days with great fun, joy and memories... I think the spiritual blessings that I gained didn't come until much later in life. During those days, it was all about the adventures we were having...)

In one small town in northern Michigan, some members of the church owned both a funeral home and the local Dairy Queen!

I think I was about 10 years old during that summer.
They had some kids our age, and they invited us to do 2 things... take a tour of the funeral home, and spend a day working at their Dairy Queen!!

Both adventures were memorable! The funeral home was large and beautiful, with the long cars out in front, and the quiet eerie feeling inside. We went into the room where all the caskets were and my eyes were huge as I looked at the open caskets on display... we even went into the embalming room! Yikes!...

But the best part of the day was getting to stand behind the counter of the drive through at thier local DQ, wait on a customer and make the order, all by myself!

I'm telling you... times were simpler back then, but I don't think any of our own grandkids would enjoy it any less than we did back then if they were behind the DQ counter today!

I don't remember what we served up but I'm pretty sure it was pre-Blizzards!

Sonja,
I love these recollections. Reminds me of my church-traveling days, when we were sometimes billeted in downstairs ( read basement) sunday school rooms with our two boys, while my husband preached a week of special services.

Brings a whole new meaning to "going to church" once you've lived on the road and in the basement of several churches. :)
God bless you - Marsha

Hi Sonja,
I hope you have had a wonderful weekend.

I love the picture of the Dairy Queen. No pictures of the funeral home :o)
What fun memories, and adventures.

God bless,

I can't imagine anything more fun to do, to tell you the truth, than getting to work in a DQ at the age of 10! I would have just LOVED that...Dairy queen's bring back MANY good memories for me too. Have a wonderful day! HUGS

Whenever I see you've posted something new about your "going along for the ride" reflections, I RUN right over. What great fun to relish those simpler times alongside you. They always make me reflect on my own, and then gratitude is born anew.

Precious.

Kathleen

P.S. I dare say I'd have eaten more than any form of wages could offset were I to be employed at a Dairy Queen :)

I love your stories! Dairy Queen holds fond memories for me too. I always got either a cherry Mr. Misty or a butterscotch sundae.

i love these trips you take us on!

just last night we were laughing with our
youngest about the vacation in which she
would call out from the back of the car,

"that's the 13th dairy queen that we have
NOT stopped at . . ."

These are my favorite stories. I'll bet you served up those wonderful dipped cones, didn't you? I always loved going to a DQ and chomping off the chocolate from the cone.

I think (hope) you're right that our grandchildren would like the adventure too.

I soooooo enjoy these and I hope you are getting them all put in a book for your grandkids.

Well you and Mark Cuban have something in common...Do you remember when he worked at the DQ in Coppell? Our kids went up there to see him

Great post...love them!

I would love to serve up some DQ specialties for a day! How fun. Even touring a funeral home is...um...a unique experience! When my kids were growing up, we would sometimes take them out of school to travel. What better way to learn about the world than to explore it!

Oh, I remember the Dairy Queens from back in the day! We rarely got to eat anywhere besides home when I was growing up. BUT....whenever we traveled to see family in WV, we always stopped at a DQ for lunch. I remember the hotdogs they used to have. The buns were shaped like the top half of slices of bread. My mother used to order those every time we ate there. Great memories!

Sonja, I continue to be in awe of your childhood memories. What a day that must have been, but I think that anything can be endured if there is ice cream at the end!

You know when my brother was young he had a friend and his friend's family had a funeral home. They would play hide and go seek in the place with the caskets. It never bothered the kids. It still gives me the willies, I do think the Dairy Queen would have been lots of fun. Very nice memories thank you for sharing.

Banana splits? Always my favorite until the moo-lattes came along! I'm still a sucker for splits.

Great memories.

Sonja, I always get a fresh breath here. I love this series. And DQ, ahhhh we would beg our parents to get us dipped cones back when Dairy Queen was the only fast food restaurant around!!

And, your parents. I love reading about your parents, 100%. It's no wonder why.

I'll take a treat from DQ over a funeral parlor any day! I'll be on a slab in the parlor soon enough. No use rushing it :-)
